DESIGN ENTRY: Janruary 23, 2008
Design. This is the concept of designing something so as to appeal to the tastes of the buyer. The way something is designed correlates to the feel it gives off when put on display- which many household items spend most of their time doing. For example, each piece of furniture was designed to fit not only a particular need but also to fill a white washed room with some kind of ambiance. To change something tangible into something more meaningful and idealistic. To create a hole for the "eye of the beholder" to look through and see exactly where the designer wants it to see. Design of an object also creates a change in one's mental outlook on a situation. Let's say I just came home from school. Several things happened that day: I left behind my jacket in a classroom and couldn't find it again, I sneezed just has someone walked by, and I received a 'C' on my math final. A well designed room has the power to take all that daily stress away. When you walk into a room that is designed to look calm, relaxing, and serene, it's a lot like listening to a happy song when you're in a bad mood. That emotion, whatever it was, changes to fit the feel of the room. Design is more powerful than one would think and it is involved in virtually every aspect of our daily lives here in America. Every building we pass as we drive down the street in our designed cars was designed. I totally agree with this chapter, because design is an important way to push your product above the rest in this world of American abundance.
Design goes along with history in the way we study famous inventors who helped change the way society functions with their designs. Johann Gutenberg designed the printing press which was directly responsible for the beginning of the availability of information and the quick spread of ideas. Thomas Edison designed the incandescent light bulb which changed the look of the night worldwide. Alexander Graham Bell helped to design the practical telephone which helped people communicate with each other over long distances and made the spread of information faster. Thus design helped form our society and is part of the technology we use in day to day life.
